Motto: History The Fun Way

Our mission statement:
"The Athenry Heritage Centre will promote and encourage learning by presenting history in a fun and engaging way for all in a safe and secure environment. The visitor experience is the primary focus for the mangement and the tour guides of the centre."

The award winning Athenry Heritage Centre is the ideal starting point to discover the best preserved medieval town in Ireland.

Visitors both young and old can experience this history with interactive exhibits of weaponry, armour, dressing up in medieval costume and Have-A-Go Archery. The heritage centre is recognised as a premium visitor attraction in County Galway for the services it provides. These services reflect the rich cultural history of the town, the Dominican Priory and its castle.

Located in St. Mary’s Church, the Athenry Heritage Centre is wheelchair accessible and our activities are inclusive to all. The ‘Medieval Experience’ is a unique visitor attraction for Galway and families of all ages will enjoy the medieval costumes, archery and interactive exhibits.

These exhibits include the torture dungeon, models of the medieval town , storyboards and a replica street of medieval crafts. The Athenry Heritage Centre is also home to the Town’s original 14th century Mace & Seal, the oldest of their kind in Ireland.

Since 1999, the Athenry Heritage Centre has provided a unique visitor experience in the west of Ireland. The services of the centre are designed to engage visitors of all ages and abilities which also includes face-painting and toy castles for the younger visitor. The centre’s ‘Medieval Experience’ brings history alive with its medieval costumes and interactive exhibits. The experience is complete with the thrill of Have-A-Go Archery in the grounds of St. Mary’s Church.

As a Community Service Project (CSP), the heritage centre provides seasonal activities which includes Halloween and the popular Christmas Winter Wonderland as well as its Walled Towns Day Festival in August. These events showcase the centre and its services but their primary focus is to raise awareness and demonstrate a need in the community.
