Enjoy guided tours of the award winning Athenry Heritage Centre, the ideal place to discover the rich history of this medieval town. Visitors can choose a general tour of the centre with a tour guide or self guide with our informative guide books or audio wands. General tours last about 35-40mins.
Discover the world of the Anglo-Normans with the Athenry Heritage Centre's 'Medieval Experience'. Visitors of all ages can enjoy activities which includes dressing up in medieval costume, a guided tour of the centre and test your skills with Have A Go archery. The Medieval Experience lasts about 90 minutes and is accessible for all ages and abilities.
A guided tour of the Athenry Heritage Centre is the ideal way to discover the best preserved medieval town in Ireland. Experience this history with your very own tour guide whose local knowledge and history of the town will highlight the influences of the Anglo-Normans in Athenry
Your journey begins with an introduction to the town, its buildings and the de Birmingham family, the mighty Lords of the Manor. See the towns original Mace & Seal, the oldest of their kind in Ireland, whose 600 year history is reflected in their design and illustrates how this medieval town became rich and economically prosperous.
Take a walk down a medieval street to learn what the locals ate, wore and drank. Enter the dungeon and find a range of torture exhibits which were used on prisoners and traitors. Or place yourself in the stocks and relive the horrors of this simple but effective punishment.
Try on medieval armour and learn about the history of medieval warfare which also includes displays of chainmail, archery, swords and helmets of the Anglo-Normans.

Your fun filled tour is led by an experienced tour guide who brings you on a 500 year journey which includes interactive exhibits, models of the town, the market square and the medieval dungeon.

Aindrias is a fiddle player and one of the new generation of Irish Storytellers. His range of music styles has engaged audiences all around the world and the Athenry MAD Festival is proud to bring him to Athenry.

Fruity & Dishy circus entertainers will thrill the children with their skills and the Gliondor stilt walkers will be parading throughout the day.
Jay Ryan and his amazing fleas circus will be performing his pop up shows and kids will love the face painting too.
The afternoon closes with the funktastic Big Jelly. A soulful band that hits all the right notes.

Little John Nee and Fionn Robinson using the very latest in technology including gramophones, electrical musical instruments, a steam iron, modern valve amplification and fashionable synthetic sounds shall voyage over 100 years back in time in a courageous attempt to collaborate with the flickering ghosts of the early silver screen. They have composed a new musical soundtrack to Buster Keaton’s classic Sherlock Jr. commissioned by The Regional Cultural Centre Letterkenny where it premiered as part of the “Sound Film Soundtrack Festival in April 2023
