During preparation of groundworks for a new roundabout, the town was gifted a new archaeological feature, the town's Loro Gate. In 2013, the area was landscaped to enhance and promote the remains of the gate and a monument was erected to illustrate its location within the medieval town.
As the best preserved medieval town in Ireland, the Athenry Conservation Plan can be viewed as a project which required cooperation by landowners both inside and outside the walls and led to a journey of rediscovery for the local community.
This booklet which can be viewed here is a culmination of this work and it's also dedicated to the memory of Professor Etienne Rynne and Stonemason Willie McErlean.
